Chinese surnames are mostly one character or single-symbol, appearing in first and followed by the given name, mostly two characters or two symbols. There are more than 6,000 Chinese surnames currently used in China, but the top 100 popular surnames cover almost all of them.
The "National Name Report" released by the Household Administration Research Center of the Ministry of Public Security of Mainland China in 2019 pointed that the top five surnames are, 王 (Wang), 李 (Li), 張 (Zhang), 劉(Liu), and 陳(Chen), and the top five main surnames alone account for one-third of the Chinese population.
