Chinese names are different from commonly known Western names, with the surname or last name (姓,xing) comes first followed by the given name or first name (名字, mingzi). Surnames are generally inherited from the father, but nowadays more and more families decide whether the child should take the paternal or maternal surname through discussions between the parents.
surname (姓,xing) + given name (名字, mingzi)
For example: 張若塵 (Zhang Ruochen)
Surname: 張 (Zhang)
Given name: 若塵 (Ruochen)
